For the first three weeks of August, Ulcinj's ancient walled Old Town becomes a stage: Ljetnja scena — the Summer Scene — fills Trg robova, the Slaves' Square before the Balšić Tower, with nightly cultural programming high above the sea.
Evenings alternate between drama performances, concerts and literary evenings, and the programme is bilingual — in Albanian and Montenegrin — reflecting Ulcinj's character as Montenegro's most culturally layered coastal town. The gallery inside the Balšić Tower hosts exhibitions alongside the outdoor events.
The setting alone justifies the climb: the Old Town of Ulcinj is one of the oldest urban sites on this coast, and watching a performance on a square shaped by centuries — with the sea glinting below the ramparts — is an experience no purpose-built venue can offer.
Most of the programme is free. August evenings are warm and dry, and the Old Town sits just above Mala plaža, so a night at the Summer Scene folds seamlessly into a beach day — dinner within the walls, then whatever the square is staging that night.
