For the first three weeks of August, Ulcinj's ancient walled Old Town becomes a stage: Ljetnja scena — the Summer Scene — fills Trg robova, the Slaves' Square before the Balšić Tower, with nightly cultural programming high above the sea.
Ulcinj's Old Town is one of the oldest urban sites on this coast — a fortified crown of stone on a headland above the water, reached by lanes that climb from the beach through gates and past centuries of layered building. By August evening the stone has soaked up the day's sun, the sea glints far below the ramparts, and the square before the tower feels made for an audience.
Evenings alternate between drama performances, concerts and literary evenings, and the programme is bilingual — in Albanian and Montenegrin — reflecting Ulcinj's character as Montenegro's most culturally layered coastal town. The gallery inside the Balšić Tower hosts exhibitions alongside the outdoor events.
That bilingual stage is the festival's deeper meaning: two languages sharing one square, night after night, in the town where Montenegro's Mediterranean and Albanian currents have always met. Few cultural programmes anywhere express their host town so exactly.
For visitors the format is wonderfully low-commitment: climb up after dinner, see what the square is staging — a play one night, a concert or a literary evening the next — and let the setting carry whatever the programme offers.
Most of the programme is free. August evenings are warm and dry, and the Old Town sits just above Mala plaža, so a night at the Summer Scene folds seamlessly into a beach day — swim until dusk, dinner within the walls, then whatever the square is staging that night.
