In the heart of Montenegro, where mountains descend toward the sea and history lives in every stone, monasteries have for centuries been far more than places of worship — they were schools, fortresses, treasuries, and gathering places of the people. More than 80 Orthodox sanctuaries are scattered across this small country, from the coast to the mountains, from the shores of Lake Skadar to the dizzying cliffs of the Ostroška greda. Each one carries its own story of faith, resilience, and the cultural identity of a people who never ceased to build, to sing, and to pray.

Montenegro is proud to have more than 80 Orthodox monasteries, each carrying a unique story and cultural significance. Around Lake Skadar alone there are approximately 300 monasteries and churches from various historical periods.
Manastir Ostrog, carved into a sheer cliff face at an altitude of around 900 metres, is the most visited pilgrimage site in Montenegro and one of the most visited Orthodox monasteries in the Balkans. It attracts believers of all religions from around the world.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal periods — temperatures are pleasant and crowds are smaller. For an authentic pilgrimage experience, the feast of Saint Vasilije of Ostrog on 12 May is unforgettable, though crowds are at their largest at that time.
All visitors must wear modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Women should wear a headscarf inside the church. Nothing may be taken from the monastery — not even a stone or a flower, especially at Ostrog where an old folk rule exists on this matter.
Some monasteries, such as Ostrog, have konaks for pilgrims, but capacity is limited and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. During major feast days, many believers sleep in the open air in front of the monastery, which for many is a particularly profound spiritual experience.
Monasteries dating from the reign of the Balšić and Crnojević dynasties in the 14th and 15th centuries are among the oldest. The Monastery of Ivan Crnojević was originally built in 1484, while Cetinje Monastery dates from 1701–1704 in its current form.
