The season runs from May to October, with June and September being the golden periods when crowds are smaller and nature is at its most beautiful. Wild camping is possible outside protected zones, provided local rules and nature are respected. In national parks (Durmitor, Lovćen, Biogradska gora, Skadarsko jezero, Prokletije), wild camping is prohibited without a permit. Outside protected areas there is a grey zone — in practice, asking the landowner in advance resolves most situations. Never leave waste behind and do not light fires during dry periods.
Organized campsites charge between €5 and €20 per night, depending on location and facilities. Coastal camps in July and August are more expensive and busier. Mountain camps are cheaper and quieter. Entry to Durmitor National Park is paid separately — around €3–5 per person.
June and September are the golden periods — fewer crowds, lower prices, pleasant temperatures for both the sea and the mountains. July and August are the most popular but also the most expensive and crowded. For mountain camping, May is possible but nights can be cold and the road to some locations may still be closed due to snow.
A sleeping bag rated to -5°C is recommended even for summer camping, as night temperatures in July drop below 10°C. Mountain boots, a waterproof jacket, and layered clothing are essential. For camping near Crno jezero, bring your own water or a filter, as springs are not always accessible.
Yes — organized campsites along the coast (Petrovac, Bar, the area around Budva) have electricity and water hookups for caravans. Mountain campsites are generally tent-only or have limited space for smaller caravans. Infrastructure is developing but the basics are available.
Skadarsko jezero is a national park and camping is regulated — there are designated spots and you need to pay the park entrance fee. The lake is a UNESCO-protected area and home to hundreds of bird species. Camping here is a special experience, but mosquitoes near the water can be intense — protection is essential.
