Walk along the canyon
A path along the edge of the Cijevna canyon, downstream from the falls, to the pools and smaller cascades.

Cascades in the Cijevna canyon near Tuzi
Niagara, as locals call these falls, is on the Cijevna river at Rakića Kuće, in Tuzi municipality, about seven kilometres from Podgorica.
The main fall is about ten metres high and drops over a stone sill into a turquoise pool, and downstream the river carries on through a narrow canyon cut into limestone. It is at its strongest in winter, in spring and after rain, while in summer it can almost dry up – which is when it becomes a favourite swimming spot for people from Podgorica. A traditional restaurant stands next to the falls.
Highlights

The Cijevna drops over a wide stone sill about ten metres high into a turquoise pool. It is strongest in winter and spring and after heavy rain, when water pours over the full width of the sill. In summer the water drops and the fall shrinks to a few thin streams.

According to local sources, the sill the water pours over was built up by villagers about 150 years ago for a mill where grain was ground. The mill is gone today, but the water still spreads over the limestone slabs in several cascades. In the rainy season smaller falls also appear downstream.

Below the falls the river runs through a narrow limestone canyon of pools, potholes and smooth rock – hence its nickname, the Montenegrin Colorado. Since 2017 the canyon has been protected as a natural monument. You can walk along its edge, but the rock is slippery and the edges are steep and unfenced.

When the water drops in summer, Niagara becomes one of Podgorica's favourite swimming spots: people swim in the pools a few metres from the fall. The Cijevna's water is cold and clear. Enter the pools carefully and don't jump where you don't know the depth.

Right by the river is the traditional Niagara restaurant, with a terrace facing the falls, serving Montenegrin dishes. It also stays open outside the swimming season, so the falls are a winter outing too – check opening hours before you go.
