A mountain town by the last conquered canyon in Europe
Šavnik is nestled deep in a mountain basin through which the small river Bukovica flows, surrounded by the canyons of four rivers. The town is known as the starting point for the Nevidio canyon — the last conquered canyon in Europe. A special natural phenomenon makes Šavnik distinctive: on days around the equinox, the sun rises and sets twice a day, a direct result of the relief of the surrounding hills of Kravice, Gradac and Vojnik. Besides the canyon, the surroundings offer exploration on foot and by bicycle through wild, unspoiled nature.

Highlights

Nevidio canyon holds the title of the last conquered canyon in Europe — it was inaccessible for decades and was explored only in modern times. Carved by the river Krušnica not far from Šavnik, the canyon can be explored on foot along a path that begins one kilometre from the ethno-village Nevidio and the restaurant Jatak. The rock face overhangs the river, creating a dramatic passage that attracts adventurers from across the region. Campervan visitors are advised to leave their vehicles at Jatak — cars and motorcycles can continue all the way to the entrance.

Šavnik is one of the rare places in Europe where the sun rises and sets twice in the same day. On days around the spring and autumn equinox, the sun rises above the hills of Kravice, sets behind the hill of Gradac at around 2 pm, then reappears in the Bukovica canyon and definitively sets behind the mountain of Vojnik. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the mountain relief that surrounds the town on all sides and is a unique tourist attraction of Šavnik.

Šavnik is surrounded by the beauty of four canyons carved by the rivers Bukovica, Bijela rijeka and the river Šavnik. This network of gorges offers hours of hiking and cycling through the wild, unspoiled nature of central Montenegro. The terrain is demanding and untamed, making it attractive for experienced hikers and adventurers who avoid mass tourism. The ethno-village Čvorovići, located 4 km from the junction towards Šavnik, is a good starting point for exploring the surrounding trails.

A few kilometres outside the centre of Šavnik, on the road towards Nevidio canyon, are the ethno-village Nevidio with comfortable log cabins and the restaurant Jatak — the base for all visitors planning to explore the canyon. The bungalows of restaurant Jatak are scattered across a meadow and equipped with electricity and bathrooms, making them a comfortable place to stay overnight in a mountain setting. This is practically the only hospitality and accommodation hub in the immediate vicinity of Nevidio canyon.
