Lipa Cave

A show cave with a little train and guides, 5 km from Cetinje

Overview

Lipa Cave (Lipska pećina) lies in the village of Lipa Dobrska, five kilometres from Cetinje.

Its system of passages and halls is about 2.5 kilometres long, and it was opened to visitors in 2015. A small tourist train runs to the entrance, and a guide leads the group along the main channel through Njegoš Hall to the Grad viewpoint. The tour takes about an hour, and the cave stays at 10–12 °C all year, so it works both in the summer heat and on a rainy day.

The main channel and large halls

Stalactites, stalagmites and columns

The cave is rich in formations: stalactites hanging from the ceiling, stalagmites rising from the floor and columns where the two have joined. Many are packed into a small space. They grow from dripping water rich in limestone, and according to the operator, nature has been shaping the cave for about six million years.

Water underground

Lipa Cave is still active: an underground stream runs through part of the system, and small pools and rimstone basins sit on the floors of the halls. Water is also why Austro-Hungarian soldiers widened the entrance in the early 20th century – they were looking for drinking water.

From a shepherd's dog to a natural monument

According to the story told by the operator, the cave was found by a shepherd's dog that fell through an opening called the Pit. Njegoš ordered it explored, Layard wrote about it in 1839, and in 1905 the first published sketch was made, when 890 metres had been explored. In 1929 the first 400 metres were laid out, and in 1968 the cave was declared a natural monument.
