A 15th-century Ottoman fortress above Virpazar
Besac Fortress is one of the most important medieval structures in the vicinity of Lake Skadar.
Besac was built by the Ottomans at the end of the 15th century, after the fall of Zeta; Montenegrins took it around 1702, and in the Second World War the Italians used it as a prison. It has been legally protected as a cultural monument since 1957. From its strategic position above Virpazar, it offers an exceptional panoramic view of the lake and surrounding mountains. The relatively well-preserved walls and tower bear witness to its former military role, and the fortress is today a popular destination for visitors to Skadar Lake National Park.
Highlights

The walls and tower of Besac Fortress are relatively well preserved despite centuries of exposure to various weather conditions. The fortress was built by the Ottomans at the end of the 15th century, after the fall of Zeta; Montenegrins took it around 1702. Since 1957, the site has been legally protected as a cultural monument of Montenegro. From its strategic position on a hilltop above Virpazar, one of the most impressive views of Lake Skadar opens up, making the fortress one of the most attractive landmarks in the surrounding area.

From the walls of Besac Fortress, a panoramic view unfolds over Lake Skadar – the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, two-thirds of which lies in Montenegro and the remainder in Albania. The lake is renowned for its extraordinary bird habitat, floating water lilies, and island monasteries. The view from the fortress encompasses the steep mountains surrounding the lake and the shoreline dotted with fishing villages. Morning hours are ideal for photography, as mist over the lake adds an extra visual dimension.

Along the shores and islands of Lake Skadar stand numerous medieval monasteries built between the 13th and 15th centuries – Monastery Kom, Monastery Vranjina and Monastery Beška. All are known for their well-preserved frescoes and fairytale-like settings amid the lake landscape. Organised boat tours departing from Virpazar frequently serve these monasteries, making access straightforward even for independent visitors. Combining a visit to Besac Fortress with these monasteries provides a complete insight into the cultural and religious heritage of this part of Montenegro.
