Šušanj Beach

A pebble beach with a pine forest, 1 km from the centre of Bar

Season: May — October
Overview

Šušanj Beach is located in the settlement of the same name, the northern suburb of Bar, connected to the city by a well-maintained promenade. The beach stretches for about 1 km, with a pebble surface mixed with sand, and a pine forest runs directly along the shore, providing visitors with natural shade without the need for umbrellas. The Mediterranean climate combined with sea air and the scent of pine trees is traditionally regarded as beneficial for the respiratory tract and rheumatic conditions. Along the beach there are cafés, restaurants, showers and a promenade, and the centre of Bar can be reached on foot in about ten minutes. Boats from the beach run seasonally to Sutomore, Petrovac and Budva.

Pine forest right along the shore

The defining feature of Šušanj Beach is the pine forest that grows directly along the shore and provides natural shade throughout the day. Unlike most Adriatic beaches where shade is only available with a paid umbrella, here the pines grow right down to the sea. Temperatures beneath the pines in summer can be up to 10 degrees lower than in open sunlight, making Šušanj particularly appealing during the hottest days of July and August. The combination of sea air and the scent of pine has traditionally been considered beneficial for the respiratory tract and rheumatic conditions, earning Šušanj the nickname 'Montenegro's spa' in local tourism circles.

Žukotrlica Beach

Žukotrlica is the main beach of Šušanj, stretching for about 1 km, with a pebble surface and clear water. The name derives from the plant žukva, which was once soaked in the sea and prepared for weaving — a local tradition that defined the entire area. The beach is divided into an organised section with sun loungers and a free section. Bars, restaurants and showers are spread along the shore. The beach is clean and well-organised, and boats that run seasonally to Petrovac, Budva and Sveti Stefan make it a convenient starting point for exploring the riviera.

Promenade to the centre of Bar

A well-maintained coastal promenade about 1 km long connects Šušanj with the centre of Bar and is one of the most beautiful walking paths on the Bar Riviera. The promenade runs along the sea, through the shade, with benches and views of the Adriatic coast. The walking connection between Šušanj and Bar takes 10 to 15 minutes and opens up the possibility of visiting Bar's marina, the city market and urban amenities without needing a car. In the evenings, local residents stroll along the promenade, making an afternoon walk an authentic experience of Mediterranean coastal life.

Old Town Bar

About 4 km from Šušanj Beach lies the Old Town of Bar — one of the most significant historical sites on the Montenegrin coast. It is a fortified town that was the centre of Bar until the city relocated to the plain, founded by local inhabitants at the time of the Slavic migrations. In the 11th century it was the capital of the free Serbian state of Zeta and the seat of the Archbishopric of Bar. Within the walls lie the ruins of churches, towers and ancient olive trees, one of which is estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Entry is charged, and a visit takes about an hour and a half.
